Places I Want To Go Someday

Life Update, February 2017

First off: happy new year!

It’s been a while, but I’m back today with a little update on how things are going.

Also, happy February! I wanted to write this update last month, to start off the new year, but I didn’t get around to it. In my defense, who really gets anything done in January? What a godawful month. It’s cold, it’s dark, and Christmas is over: deal with it. Blergh! I am glad to welcome February today.

Speaking of Christmas, the holiday season was great! Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and new years came and went, and I enjoyed every minute of it! I think my highlights this year were going to the Front Royal Zombie Walk for Halloween (all decked out in our most creative zombie hunter gear), the Thanksgiving food (we really went all out this year and every single dish we had was pure perfection), and all of Christmas, because: Christmas.

Here’s some pictures from my Instagram feed for ya.

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times

2016 was definitely a good one (I got to move to America, and oh right! We got married), but it wasn’t the most productive of years for me. This had entirely (and I really mean the full 100%) to do with the fact that I wasn’t allowed to work. Nobody age 28, with a crisp new college degree in their pocket, should be forced to sit still for months, and months, and some more months. The green card application process isn’t the speediest one and I had to be patient. In the meantime, it’s not like I could go out and make myself useful otherwise because 1) I live in a tiny town, in what I’m pretty sure I am allowed to call rural Virginia, and 2) our neighborhood is connected to the rest of the world by 0 sidewalks; the only way I can go anywhere is by car and since I don’t have a Virginia State driver’s license in my possession (this ties in nicely with the wait for the green card) this leaves me with very few options. I tried to keep myself busy and not lose momentum by reading books about professional development, or other things I was curious about. This worked fairly decently, but free time is seductive and so is Netflix.

Ok 2017: Let’s do this!

2017 is here and I am excited about it! Mostly because (somebody give me a drum roll……): I am finally allowed to work!

To clarify, I am still waiting for my green card (a.k.a. the document that officially classifies me as a permanent resident of the US), but I am now the proud owner of a Employment Authorization Document (EAD), which allows me to work. This has to be a sign that 2017 is going to be good, right? I’d like to think so.

While I still have to arrange a few things before I can get my driver’s license (which is pretty essential for working, because remember the 0 sidewalks I mentioned?), I’ve started job searching and applying here and there. It shouldn’t be that much longer, I am hoping I can get my driver’s license in about a week or two. It’s exciting! I feel like im awakening from a long hibernation …maybe that’s why I act like a big grouchy bear sometimes… Ha! Look at me and my bear metaphor! America is rubbing off on me.

I cannot wait to rejoin the workforce and to be of use to some greater cause again. Until then, my days are filled with job searching, research, and cover letter writing. Let’s hope it all pays off soon!

Thanks for reading! Feel free to leave a comment below and take a look around the site! I hope to see you again on! Love, Emma

Haha thank you so much, fingers crossed! My planner and I are very excited about that idea (isn’t it pretty? :O)

Dear Emma, I am sure you have many more readers. You must have! Your writing is of such high quality and you are such a lovely person.
I read some stuff on this blog before, but today I took the time to read most of it and, again, I am impressed! After our visit last september your mother and I recognise so much of the experiences that you write about and the places where you have been. That makes reading this blog even more fun.
    Love you! Dad.
